Silver gelatin prints are a part of limited edition of 31. The prints are numbered 0-31, making a total of 32 prints. Print number 0 is artist's copy and is not for sale. The ones numbered 1-31 would ever be sold. Each print has a serial number ending in the sequence. For example, 2/31 would have a serial number that would end with "_02". Note that all prints, especially early ones would not explicitely show "2/31" as conventionally expected.
Silver gelatin prints are printed strictly on two paper sizes: 14 inch and 24 inch. The shorter dimension in any of these would vary depending on the aspect ratio of the image. The edition of 31 is all inclusive and does not depend on the size or any other parameter.
Pigment ink prints can be open edition (no serial number) or limited edition. Any print larger than 11 inch on the longer dimension would belong to a limited edition of 31, as above, following the same serial number convention.
The edition number 31 is intentionally chosen as a prime number, representing uniqueness, purity, and indivisibility --- qualities reflected in both nature's design and the mathematical systems that underpin it. As an engineer and nature photographer, I find resonance in how natural patterns emerge from seemingly abstract principles --- from signal frequencies to the spirals of galaxies, from bird calls to the grain of wood.
It is essential to understand the characteristics of the product to verify the authenticity, especially when they are a part of limited edition.
Silver gelatin prints are dry mounted on 2-ply museum mat board. On the mat, below the print the serial number, date of print, and the title of print (if available) are hand written along with hand signature using archival pigment black ink pen. When sold with overmatting, a label on the back of the foam board is attached that contain the same information and the logo.
Pigment ink (also known as digital prints) are not dry-mount. The serial number, date of print, title and signature would be available either below the print on the same paper or on the reverse side. When matted, the label with the logo and information would be provided at the back of the foam board (or framing backing).
Each framed print also comes with a small pamphlet, describing the process and the product. The reverse side of the pamphlet contain care and cleaning information. With the exception of a few early framed prints (of 14 inch size), all prints are framed behind 99% UV protected glass.
